Education Endorsements

The grade levels and subjects you want to teach are called endorsements. Depending on the type of endorsement, you are required to choose one or more in order to graduate and obtain your teaching certificate.

When you decide what grade levels and subjects you would like to teach, you are required to choose:

  • one field endorsement OR
  • two subject endorsements OR
  • a combination of both

A third type of endorsement is supplemental. Supplemental endorsements are optional.

One field or two subject endorsements is the minimum number of endorsements you must choose for your education program. However, you may choose more, for a variety of reasons: You may want to be able teach multiple subjects and/or grade levels. You may want to add endorsements to increase your teaching qualifications and become more marketable as you search for employment. Or, you simply may need to fill more credit hours as you move toward graduation.

Field endorsements

Field endorsements can stand on their own. This means that you can choose one field endorsement and not be required to choose any other endorsements in order to receive your education degree.

Subject endorsements

Subject endorsements must be paired with a field endorsement or another subject endorsement. This means you are required to choose two subject endorsements or a subject endorsement and a field endorsement. However, the Secondary English, Vocal Music Education, and Middle Level Education subject endorsements can stand alone – they do not need to be paired with another endorsement.
