Studying music at Wayne State

The Department of Music develops musical talent and prepares you for careers in the music industry or music education, creating and inspiring musical culture. Wayne State provides a rich musical experience for all students and contributes to the musical life of the community and state. Whether you are pursuing a Music degree program or want to take part in music as an extracurricular activity, you have a variety of musical opportunities to choose from: Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Mariachi, and other smaller ensembles, as well as Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Lyrica Soprano/Alto Choir, or Fortis Tenor/Bass Choir. Additional opportunities such as international travel, performance scholarships, and active student organizations provide an education that extends beyond the classroom.

In addition to many chances for musical involvement, Wayne State has several excellent facilities used for performances. The beautiful Peterson Fine Arts Building is home to the Lied Performing Arts Center and Ramsey Theatre, which seats about 600 spectators and helps performers gain a better understanding of the necessary scale of projection required to fill a large house. Recently renovated, Peterson boasts numerous classrooms and practice rooms for the variety of musical groups or if you need a quiet space to practice your instrument or vocal talent. The renovation provided quality upgrades to practice and performance spaces that will make a difference in your musical journey at Wayne State.

Wayne State College has earned a solid reputation for outstanding performing arts programs. Thousands of patrons attend concerts, plays, musicals, and other cultural events each year. You’ll have many opportunities to build your music portfolio and gain experience as a performer.
