Studying art and design at Wayne State
The Department of Art and Design is where ideas turn into experiences. Whether you’re sketching from imagination, creating visual communication for digital and print, or shaping physical works in three-dimensional space, you’ll get hands-on access to professional tools and studio environments from day one. Our home in the Studio Arts Building includes a professional Mac lab for graphic design and dedicated studios for painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and pottery.
As a student here, you’ll explore traditional processes and emerging technologies, learn how creative works are made, and develop your own visual voice through critique, theory, and practice. You’ll build a portfolio of work, study art history through a global lens, and engage with visiting artists and exhibitions.
Our goal is simple: we prepare you for what’s next. Graduates go on to teach, work as professional creatives, build brands and experiences, or pursue advanced graduate study. Your time in our department will help you build skills, confidence, and creative agility — opening doors to careers and opportunities throughout the art world and beyond.

Being at Wayne State has helped me find my own unique style in art. I have learned many different art styles, techniques, and mediums that I was not familiar with before. The classes have challenged me to explore new things, and they’ve allowed me to discover myself as an artist.
