If you want to become a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Wayne State College can help you build the academic foundation and experiences you’ll need for medical school. Pre-Osteopathic Medicine is a pre-professional pathway, not an academic major. You’ll choose a major such as Biology or Health Sciences while working with an advisor to complete prerequisite coursework and prepare for the medical school application process.

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine are physicians who practice in every area of medicine, from primary care and pediatrics to emergency medicine, surgery, and other specialties. Osteopathic medicine emphasizes whole-person, patient-centered care, disease prevention, and the connection between the body’s structure and function. DO students also receive specialized training in the musculoskeletal system and osteopathic manipulative treatment.

Most students complete a four-year bachelor’s degree before entering osteopathic medical school. Qualified Wayne State students may also pursue an accelerated early-admission pathway through WSC’s partnership with Kansas City University.

Accelerated pathway to Kansas City University
Wayne State College is a partner institution of the Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCU-COM), providing qualified students an accelerated pathway to medical school. After completing their junior year, at least 90 undergraduate credit hours, and KCU’s other requirements, accepted students have a reserved seat in the KCU College of Osteopathic Medicine and can begin medical school without completing a traditional fourth undergraduate year. The accelerated pathway provides an opportunity to complete a Wayne State bachelor’s degree and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in seven years rather than the traditional eight.

Honors Program

Honors students complete an independent research project usually spanning their junior and senior years. Your research can take you just about anywhere - in the lab or library, in the community, or in the U.S. or abroad! Honors work can also be very practical. Prospective employers and graduate admissions committees often look carefully at an undergraduate record for evidence of extra initiative and genuine intellectual strength.

This timeline is a general guide for students following a traditional four-year undergraduate path to osteopathic medical school. Admission requirements and application timelines vary by school, so work closely with your advisor and review requirements for each medical school you are considering.

Freshman year

  1. Meet with your Pre-Osteopathic Medicine program advisor to choose a major, plan prerequisite courswork, and discussion opportunities for job shadowing, clinical experience, service, internships, and research.
  2. Build a strong foundation, particularly in your science courses.
  3. Join the Health Science Club or other campus organizations to engage in health-related activities and participate in networking events.
  4. Begin learning about osteopathic medicine and researching D.O. schools and their admission requirements. Be mindful of prerequisite course and GPA requirements, location, costs, program reputation, and entrance exams score requirements. Inquire with the professional school for any specific questions or guidance.

Sophomore year

  1. Continue completing prerequisit coursework and maintaining a strong academic record.
  2. Gain health care experience through job shadowing, volunteering, employment, internships, or other opportunities.
  3. Continue researching osteopathic medical schools, including prerequisite courses, GPA expectations, costs, locations, and admission requirements. 
  4. Study and practice for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
  5. Take the free practice MCAT exam available at WSC each semester.

Interested in the KCU accelerated pathway?
Meet with your pre-health advisor early in your sophomore year. Students who meet Kansas City University’s eligibility guidelines may receive an application link in December and may be invited to interview with KCU during the spring semester.

Junior year

  1. Continue prerequisite and upper-level science coursework and take the MCAT according to your application plan.
  2. Identify individuals who can provide strong letters of recommendation and review the requirements of the medical schools you plan to apply to.
  3. Continue clinical experience, community service, job shadowing, research, and other activities that demonstrate your preparation for medicine.
  4. Develop your personal statement and prepare other application materials.
    Begin the AACOMAS application process when it opens and submit a complete application as early as practical.
  5. Complete secondary applications and prepare for medical school interviews.

KCU accelerated pathway: Students accepted through KCU’s partner program return to Wayne State for their junior year to complete required coursework. After completing at least 90 undergraduate credit hours and satisfying KCU requirements, they may matriculate at KCU and forego the traditional senior year.

Senior year

  1. Complete your major, remaining prerequisite coursework, and bachelor’s degree requirements.
  2. Complete secondary applications and participate in interviews as requested by medical schools.
  3. Continue gaining meaningful clinical, service, leadership, and academic experiences.
  4. Review admissions offers, financial aid, and other factors as you choose the medical school that is right for you.
  5. Complete any final requirements for matriculation and prepare to begin medical school after graduation.

    Pre-Osteopathic Medicine Program of Study

    The Pre-Osteopathic Medicine pathway can be paired with several undergraduate majors, but Biology and Health Sciences are recommended options that provide a strong foundation for medical school. Because admission requirements vary by osteopathic medical school, work with your advisor to select courses that meet the requirements of the schools you plan to pursue. Participation in WSC's Pre-Osteopathic Medicine pathway does not guarantee admission to medical school.

    Biology (B.A. or B.S.) - Our Biology program lays the groundwork needed for students entering medical school and provides plenty of time in our biology and research labs.

    Health Sciences (B.A. or B.S.) - The Health Sciences major offers a solid foundation in biology and chemistry, and emphasizes how these fields relate to careers in health and medicine.

     

    Sample courses for Pre-Osteopathic Medicine students

    Students may be advised to take the following courses while pursuing one of the recommended majors. Please consult with your advisor to draft a final plan of study, and be sure to check with your intended medical school to make sure you're meeting all prerequisite course requirements.

    • Credits: 4

      Description: A study of the mechanisms of inheritance, the molecular basis of gene action and the use of molecular techniques and molecular technology in biomedical, agricultural, and industrial research. The lab component of this course focuses on hands-on use of molecular equipment and technologies used in graduate and industrial molecular based research. (3 hours lecture, 3 hours lab) $30 class fee required.

      Prerequisites: C- or better in BIO 110 Biology Concepts and CHE 106 General Chemistry I

    • Credits: 3

      Description: Study of the structure and function of cells and tissues of the human organism. Light microscopy and digital histology slides of human and other vertebrate organs and tissues will be studied. Tissue morphology and histo-pathology will be discussed along with relevant clinical considerations. An understanding of human anatomy would be beneficial to students taking this course. Histology is highly recommended for students interested in health-related, biomedical, and biological careers.

      Prerequisite: BIO 110 Biology Concepts

      Class fee: $30

      Notes: 3 hours lecture and lab combined

    • Credits: 3

      Description: This course will provide an overview of the biology and pathology of cancer. Lecture and discussion will include the various molecular and genetic changes that occur when a cell transforms from a normal to a malignant cancer cell. Changes in cancer prevalence over time, as well as current prevention measures, diagnostics, and treatments, will also be discussed.

      Prerequisites: A grade of C- or better in BIO 110 Biology Concepts. BIO 320 Molecular Genetics recommended.

      Description: A study of the fundamental physiological processes of the human body. Functions of the 11 organ systems will be studied. (3 hours lecture and one 3-hour lab) $30 class fee required.

      Prerequisite: BIO 220 Human Anatomy and CHE 106 General Chemistry I

    • Credits: 4

      Description: Topics of study detail the structure and physiology of microorganisms including mechanisms of pathogenesis. Beneficial aspects of microorganisms are also discussed with regard to both the human body and the environment. Lab techniques include microbial identification, enumeration procedures and student designed research.

      Prerequisites: A “C-” or better in BIO 110, and CHE 106.

      Description: Study of animal parasites and the effects they have on their hosts. Studies in this course center on parasites of humans, other vertebrates, and invertebrates. Taxonomy, morphology, development, physiology, identification, epidemiology, and pathogenesis are emphasized. An understanding of human anatomy and histology would be beneficial to students taking this course. Parasitology is highly recommended for students interested in health-related, biomedical, and biological careers.

      Description: An advanced study of the structure and function of the eukaryotic cell. Topics will include the basics of modern cell biology including signal transduction, cell cycle regulation, and gene expression. (4 hours lecture-lab combined) $30 class fee required.

      Prerequisites: Prerequisites: BIO 320 Molecular Genetics, and CHE 107 General Chemistry II

      Description: Under close supervision, students will dissect a human cadaver and prepare anatomical specimens. Students will learn proper dissection techniques and expand on their basic knowledge of human anatomy using a team-based approach.

      Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

      Notes: 3 hours lecture and lab combined

      Description: The topics for this course will include the biological, physical and chemical properties of antigens and antibodies, host-antigen interaction, humoral and cellular response mechanisms, serologic reactions, mechanisms of antibody formation, hypersensitivity and the role of the immune response in cancer and organ transplants.

      Prerequisite: A “C-” or better in BIO 110 Biology Concepts; BIO 320 Molecular Genetics is recommended.

      Description: Study of proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates with emphasis on their structure, function, and metabolism. (3 hours of lecture and 3 hours of laboratory) $20 class fee required.

      Prerequisite: C- or better in CHE 208 Introductory Organic Chemistry or CHE 315 Organic Chemistry II

      Description: AHA/BLS Healthcare Providers course modules one through four. Review of cardiovascular anatomy and function, causes of cardiovascular disease, and cardiac arrest. CPR for adults and pediatrics.

    Where you'll learn

    Students in this program will take courses in Carhart Science, home to WSC's math and science programs. Carhart Science features several labs for chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, plant science, zoology, genetics, microbiology, physics, Earth science, fermentation, and science education. Additionally, there is a molecular-based student research lab, microscopy suite, a cadaver lab, and a cell culture facility.
