Nebraska Time
Affixed to the west side of the Carhart Science Building is a large outdoor clock made of lights, a piece of art known as “Nebraska Time” that was designed by artist Ansen Seale and purchased through the 1% for Art Program. The installation is operated digitally, but still requires the viewer to read the time in an analog way. The relationship of the lights to each other represents the time.
The hours are noted by the inner ring of 12 blue lights. The minutes are represented by the outside set of 24 blue and yellow lights, with each light representing 2.5 minutes. The pink lights indicate where the hour and minute hands would be. The seconds are represented by the smaller green lights. They light up, one per second, each minute, then turn off, one per second, each minute. The clock measures 12 feet in diameter and 12 inches in depth.
