One Percent for Art
Since 1978, Nebraska’s “1% for Art” law has directed funding for several pieces of art for Wayne State College, such as the iconic bronze Herb Mignery statue, Ansen Seale's Nebraska Time, Sidney Buchanan’s welded steel sculpture, Cybele, and dozens of other sculptures, paintings, and other forms of art across campus and in our facilities.
Depending on legislative appropriations, the law requires that a minimum amount of money be set aside to purchase artwork when there is new construction of more than $500,000, and remodeling or renovation of a public building in excess of $250,000. Buildings must be open to the public for an art project to be initiated.
In coordination with the Nebraska Arts Council, an art committee is then established for each project to determine the criteria for suitable locations, art forms, and artist eligibility.
Artwork funded by the 1% mandate can be viewed digitally in the Campus Art Collection.
