The baseball/softball complex opened in the spring of 1996. Located north of Memorial Stadium, the complex provides a picturesque setting for baseball and softball games. Prior to the baseball complex opening on campus, the Wayne State College baseball team played home games at Hank Overin Field in Wayne, the local American Legion field. The softball complex was necessary after the previous softball field was converted into a parking lot.
In 2006, the facility was named for the late Pete Chapman, who served roles as coach and athletic director at WSC from 1983 to 1999. Chapman was instrumental in the Wildcats' acceptance into NCAA Division II in 1989 and played an important role in the change from independent status to joining the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 1999.
Baseball Complex
A locker room was constructed at the baseball field in 2003. More improvements were made in 2004, including a concession stand with restrooms and a press box. A wood fence was installed on the baseball field in 2005 and 2006 with enhanced batting cages along the left field line. In 2007, a new 10-inning digital scoreboard was installed in right-center field. In 2014, protective netting was placed over the grandstands to protect fans from foul balls. The improvements made to the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex over the years make it one of the top facilities in NCAA Division II Central Region.
The Pete Chapman Baseball Complex played host to Northern Sun Conference Baseball Championships for five consecutive seasons from 2004 to 2008.
Softball Complex
A locker room facility and press box was built at the softball field in 2007. The summer of 2009 saw a new wood fence installed at the softball field with a new electronic scoreboard added prior to the start of the 2011 season. In 2014, a protective netting was placed around bleachers at the softball complex to protect fans from foul balls during games and from the adjacent baseball field when both teams are playing at the same time.
The Pete Chapman Softball Complex hosted the 2010 NCAA Division II Central Region #1 Tournament and over the years played host to several NSIC Crossover Tournaments.
