FAFSA Verification
About 20% of financial aid applications are selected by the Central Processing System for a process called verification. FAFSA verification is a federally mandated process that requires schools to collect documentation to check the accuracy of the FAFSA information.
If a student is selected, the documentation needed by the Student Financial Services Office will be listed on the student’s WildcatsOnline to-do list. An email is sent to the student at their WSC email address notifying them that additional information is needed to further process their financial aid application.
Verification must be completed prior to June 30 of the following year; however, Wayne State College will not disburse aid or certify loan applications until verification is complete and accurate.
When differences are found, Wayne State College will make corrections electronically on the student’s behalf. The student will receive an updated Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Department of Education and an email notification of the changes from the Financial Aid Office.

What happens if my FAFSA is selected for verification?
In addition to the FAFSA notification, you will be advised by email from the Office of Financial Aid at Wayne State College to submit additional documentation for your financial aid to be awarded. Once we receive all required documents, we will complete your FAFSA verification review. If any discrepant information is found, we will correct your FAFSA and resubmit it to the federal processor to update. You will be notified by email of any changes that effect your Student Aid Index (SAI).
How are FAFSA records chosen for verification?
FAFSAs can be selected as they are processed at CPS (the U.S. Department of Education’s FAFSA Central Processing System) or selected by Wayne State College based on specific selection criteria. If "selected for verification" by CPS, the selected FAFSA has already been assigned to a verification group when received by Wayne State College. FAFSAs are selected for many reasons and being selected does not mean that you did anything wrong.
How will I be notified if my FAFSA has been selected for verification?
Wayne State College will notify students via their Wayne State College email when their FAFSA is selected for verification.
How do I get into WildcatsOnline to view my “My To-Dos”?
- Log in to myWSC.
- Select the WildcatsOnline application.
- Once in WildcatsOnline, click on the “Financial Aid” tab.
- On the right, there is a section called “My To-Dos."
What documentation is required to complete FAFSA verification?
Students will have specific items in their My To-Dos on their WildcatsOnline portal that will identify the appropriate form(s) required for their verification. As we receive the required documents, we will update your information, and the items will no longer show in the My To-Dos on WildcatsOnline.
How can I submit the required verification documents?
Verification documents can be submitted securely through myWSC.
Is there a deadline for submitting and completing the verification?
Verification must be completed prior to June 30 of the following year; however, Wayne State College will not disburse aid or certify loan applications until verification is complete and accurate. It is in the student’s best interest to complete the FAFSA verification process as soon as possible.
How long does the verification process take?
The verification process cannot be finalized until all required documents/signatures are collected. Once all required documents are received, please allow 2-3 weeks for processing.
Can I elect to not complete the verification process?
Yes, you can elect to NOT complete the FAFSA verification process. However, making this decision means that you forfeit access to all federal aid, need-based aid, and Wayne State College’s institutional need-based aid.
