Studying health, human performance, and sport at Wayne State
The Health, Human Performance, and Sport Department prepares you for careers in exercise science, physical education, sport management, athletic training, strength and conditioning, and other careers related to health and human performance. With our state-of-the-art human performance laboratory, you’ll have access to elaborate equipment designed for a variety of testing needs, including body composition, aerobic and anaerobic fitness, and functional movement assessment. Our facilities and equipment are used for physical health and wellbeing classses, exercise physiology labs, training students in fitness evaluation and injury assessment, and conducting research.
As a student here, you’ll have opportunities to participate in a variety of community service projects. You can also get a broad range of hands-on sport management experiences, including working with the Wayne State athletic department and organizing promotional events. If graduate school is in your future, we also provide an online master's degree in Sport and Recreation Management, and an online master’s degree in Human Performance and Wellness. WSC also offers a certificate of advanced studies in Strength and Conditioning.
The department pushes real-world experiences such as opportunities to work at collegiate basketball tournaments and tour regional state-of-the-art sport facilities. You can also travel with other students to conferences to gain in-depth knowledge about nutrition, mobility, training, sports medicine, and more. Wayne State’s Exercise Science program is recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) in the Education Recognition Program (ERP) for the field of strength and conditioning.

Barbara Engebretsen, Ph.D.
Professor
Dr. Barbara Engebretsen is an exercise science and public and global health professor at Wayne State College. She is active member of professional and service organizations, including the American Physiological Society, American College of Sports Medicine, the American Public Health Association, and Rotary International. She helped developed the Public and Global Health minor and One Health Studies major.

Kris Fox, Ph.D.

Dr. Kris Fox is an exercise science professor at Wayne State College and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in applied human and sport physiology, exercise science, and human performance.

Cameron Geisert, Ed.D.
Professor
Dr. Cameron Geisert is a sports management professor at Wayne State College. His teaching interests are sociology of sport, sport law, sport event and facility management, ethics in sports, and sport marketing.

Kevin Hill, Ed.D.
