College Relations and Marketing

Marketing and Communication Services

Promoting our brand with unity, clarity, and consistency helps everyone associate WSC with credibility and quality. It also helps ensure that our mission, vision, and values are heard clearly and resonate with our audience. The Office of College Relations at WSC offers many services to help members of campus communicate effectively and promote themselves. We can help you write content and craft messages, share information, develop communication and marketing strategies, and tell stories of your successes – whether it be in print or digital format. We invite you to use any of the marketing and communication services we provide:

Campus communication

There are many forms of internal and external communication for sharing your message. Internal communication refers to messaging that targets the campus community and may include campus-wide email, myWSC announcements, and on-campus signage (digital or print). External communication refers to messaging that targets the general public and may include news releases, social media, and/or the WSC website. If your department or office has an announcement or information that’s urgent, the dean or department head should contact the College Relations Office to send out a campus-wide email. To use any of our campus communication services, please contact Jay Collier at [email protected].

Campus event promotion and advertising

Event promotion encompasses a wide range of services. Whether you're a student or an employee, we can help advertise your event using any number of communication strategies, and we can even help you design promotional materials. The most common forms of event communication used on campus include:

  • campus-wide email
  • digital campus ads (kiosks)
  • posters or flyers
  • the WSC website (online event calendar, web page development, myWSC announcements, news posts)
  • social media posts (Facebook, X, Instagram)
  • press releases
  • print ads
  • external digital marketing.

To have your event added to our online web calendar, and/or to have a digital ad created for our campus kiosks, please complete our online Submit an Event Form.

For all other event promotion and advertising services, please contact the Director of College Relations:

Crisis communication and urgent announcements

Crisis communication and urgent announcement channels include myWSC, RAVE text messages, campus email, the WSC website, and/or social media. Examples include weather announcements, health crises, and hazardous situations on campus. In crisis situations, all official statements are released through the Office of College Relations. The director, in cooperation with the college president and the college’s Crisis Management Team, will be responsible for releasing all information in accordance with the Wayne State College Crisis Management Plan. Wayne State College personnel who are contacted by the media about campus emergencies should direct the inquiry to Jay Collier at [email protected].

News releases and public service announcements

News releases and public service announcements are written and released by the College Relations staff to let reporters and the general public know what's happening at WSC. If you have a newsworthy story or event that could generate current or future media attention, please contact Barry Dalkhoetter at [email protected].

Website updates, web analytics, and SEO

Our office works collaboratively with various departments to design, develop, and update the official WSC website. When building pages on our website, we make decisions about what is placed where, imagery used, and information architecture with respect to user statistics and analytics, optimization, responsiveness, and digital accessibility. Because users consume content differently online than they do in print, we also tailor our messaging so it’s in line with digital content standards and search engine optimization.

For updates to existing pages or to request a new web project or web page creation, please contact Amanda Broberg at [email protected] or Kristi Nelson at [email protected].

Writing and copy editing

We work in cooperation with the appropriate department to write content for a variety of needs, including print and digital publications, email, websites, social media, news releases, and more. We adhere to best practices when it comes to our writing. We use an active voice with a conversational style, and we avoid writing with an institutional tone wherever possible. As a general rule, we follow AP style with a few exceptions that are unique to WSC. It is important to follow these standards so our voice remains strong and unified across all platforms.

If you need help crafting or editing your written message or curating content, please contact Amanda Broberg at [email protected] or Jay Collier at [email protected].
