Wayne State College has been recognized as one of the region’s top colleges for Art Education, earning the No. 2 spot in Nebraska and ranking No. 12 in the Plains States in College Factual’s 2025 Best Art Education Bachelor’s Degree Schools rankings.

Wayne State’s Art Education degree prepares students to become both skilled artists and effective educators. The PK-12 field endorsement combines extensive study in visual art with professional teacher preparation, giving future art teachers experience across a wide range of artistic media and classroom settings.

Students build their artistic skills through coursework in areas such as drawing, design, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, digital imaging, and art history. Along the way, they have opportunities to develop and display their own work, work in studio environments, engage with visiting artists, and experience art beyond campus through galleries, museums, and other creative settings.

The education side of the program prepares students to translate that artistic knowledge into meaningful learning experiences for children and adolescents. Coursework addresses art curriculum and teaching methods, instructional design, assessment, human learning, and classroom management, helping students learn how to foster creativity while building their own skills as educators.

Art Education students also gain practical experience in schools before graduation. Field experiences are incorporated throughout Wayne State’s educator preparation programs, followed by a semester of clinical practice in which students work alongside an experienced classroom teacher. These experiences give future art educators opportunities to apply what they have learned and develop confidence working with students.

Graduates of Wayne State’s Art Education program have gone on to teach in school districts throughout Nebraska and the surrounding region, putting their preparation in both art and education to work in PK-12 classrooms.
