Wayne State College will present “An Evening of Choirs” showcasing uplifting repertoire at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 20, in Ley Theatre, located on the second floor of the Brandenburg Building. The performance is free and open to the public.
The concert will also be livestreamed. The concert program will be available on the event page, which can be accessed from the Upcoming Livestream Events section on the Watch Live page.
Titled “Raise Your Voice,” the concert features Wayne State’s Lyrica, Fortis, and Concert Choir, reflecting the individuality and connection of the three ensembles. Dr. Matthew Armstrong, director of choral activities at Wayne State, will conduct the concert.
Repertoire showcases a range of choral styles and traditions, highlighting expression and versatility. Lyrica performs the gentle lullaby “A Cradle Song” by H. Walford Davies; the social justice hymn “We Are Called” by David Haas; and a traditional Scottish folk song, “The Skye Boat Song.” Fortis delivers the resolute “Rise Up, O Men of God” arranged by Donald Boyd; the humorous “Please, Kind Sir” by P.D.Q. Bach; barbershop favorites; and the popular Boyz II Men version of “In the Still of the Nite.”
Global and historical influences color the Concert Choir’s presentation with the inclusion of the Psalm setting “Salmo 150” by Brazilian composer Ernani Aguiar; the beautiful, moving “Wind” by Carolyn Jennings; and the cheerful “Nelly Bly” by Stephen Foster. The concert concludes with John Rutter’s beloved setting of “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.”
