Dr. Karl Kolbeck, accompanied by pianist Shelly Armstrong, will perform a clarinet recital at 7:30 p.m. in Ley Theatre.

Dramatic flair and creative virtuosity characterize Dr. Karl Kolbeck’s faculty clarinet recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Ley Theatre, located on the second floor of Wayne State College’s Brandenburg Building. The recital is free and open to the public.

The recital will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, visit the Watch Live page. A downloadable PDF of the concert program will be posted on the event page when it becomes available. The event page can be accessed from the Upcoming Livestream Events section on the Watch Live page.

Repertoire imagines a lovely garden through the flowing melodies of “Suite from the Victorian Kitchen Garden” by Paul Reade before turning to the soaring expression of “Romanza” by Michele Mangani. Carlos Guastavino’s “Tonada y Cueca” blends a slow melodic love song with a lively Chilean-style folk dance. The unaccompanied “Hommage à M. de Falla” by Béla Kovács showcases dramatic contrasts and syncopated rhythms with the clarinet imitating other instruments such as a trumpet and guitar.

Shelly Armstrong, Wayne State’s collaborative pianist, will provide accompaniment.
