Wayne State's 50th Annual Math Contest
The WSC Math Contest is designed for middle school and high school students who enjoy challenging their math skills. Participating students will take a math exam that will be scored against other students, participate in a game of Jeopardy, and enjoy other activities including a math scavenger hunt, solving Breakout Box activities, or watching a show at the planetarium.
Event activities
Math Exams
The math exams include pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, algebra 2, pre-calculus, and calculus. Each school can have two students signed up for each exam. Calculators are allowed, but students must bring their own. We will not provide calculators. Cellphones are not allowed to be used or to be out during the exam. If a student is using a cellphone during the exam, that student will be disqualified. Once these exams are scored, the top 10 students in algebra, geometry, algebra 2, and pre-calculus will receive certificates, with the top three receiving medals. The top five students in pre-algebra and calculus will receive certificates, with the top three receiving medals.
Jeopardy
Students will participate in a round of Jeopardy. Each school will be represented by a team of four students. The top team from each Jeopardy group will advance to the final Jeopardy round. The first-place team will receive a prize.
Additional activities
When students are not participating in Jeopardy, they will have the opportunity to participate in solving a Breakout Box, completing a math scavenger hunt, or watching a planetarium show.
