Language and Literature Scholarships at WSC
The Department of Language and Literature offers financial assistance to students through scholarships for students studying English or Spanish. The awards are based on past achievement and promise of future academic succes.
For incoming freshmen, additional information will be sent about how these scholarships may work in conjunction with your admissions-based scholarships.

How to apply for language and literature scholarships
Incoming freshmen: To apply for language and literature scholarships, you must first apply and be admitted to Wayne State College.
- Apply for admission - To be considered for scholarships at Wayne State College, you must first be fully admitted.
- Log in to the scholarship portal - After you're admitted, use the WSC login credentials you receive to access the scholarship application.
- First-time users in the portal will be guided through a series of questions to determine scholarships for which you are eligible. After completing this portion, find "The Wildcat's Pen: Essay Prize for Langauge and Literature" to complete the scholarship application. If you cannot complete the application in one sitting, you may save and submit it later, or update and resubmit it if something changes.
Current students: You may begin applying for scholarships for the 2027-28 academic year beginning Oct. 1, 2026.
- Log in to the scholarship portal using your WSC username and password.
- Find "The Wildcat's Pen: Essay Prize for Langauge and Literature" to complete the scholarship application. If you cannot complete the application in one sitting, you may save and submit it later, or update and resubmit it if something changes.
Submission material for incoming students
Along with your scholarship application, you will need to be prepared to submit:
- A 500-word essay on the following topic: How did you become interested in your chosen major?
- A letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor
Incoming student scholarship deadline: Scholarship applications must be submitted by Feb. 1, 2027.
Submission material for current students
There is no submission material required for current students.
Current student scholarship deadline: Scholarship applications must be submitted by Jan. 31, 2027.
