Academic Advising and Coaching

Advisors from the Holland Academic Success Center provide one-on-one guidance during your time at Wayne State. We create specific plans to help you focus on your academic goals. We advise freshmen, transfer students, students who are still exploring majors, or walk-in students with an advising question. We will help you:

  • Develop an education plan
  • Arrange the best possible class schedule
  • Register for classes for the upcoming term
  • Work with Career Services to help you determine a major or career
  • Complete a change of major/advisor form
  • Prepare for graduation
  • Listen to any concerns you have about college
  • Complete your degree path to graduation

Academic advising

Getting started: Who is my advisor?
Every student is assigned an academic advisor. Your advisor is listed in your WildcatsOnline account. Most first-year students and students who haven’t declared a major are assigned an advisor from the Holland Academic Success Center. Holland advisors will reach out to you via your WSC email during the summer before your first year and provide you with important information on what to expect during the fall.

Prior to your second year (or after you’ve declared a major if you’re undecided), your Holland advisor will help you transition to a faculty advisor from the same department as your major. This transition will happen after course registration in the spring of your first year. Holland advisors will remain as a secondary advisor and a constant resource, should you need it.

Special program advising
If you fall into one of the following five groups, you will NOT be advised by a Holland advisor. Instead, you will be assigned an advisor from that office or program. However, you can still use Holland advising services as a secondary resource.

  • Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP)
  • Career Scholars
  • Honors Students
  • International Students
  • TRIO Students

Changing advisors
You may request a different advisor by contacting the department office for your major, or by contacting the Holland Academic Success Center if you are an undeclared student.

Academic coaching

Our academic coaching services are available for all students. We can help you take ownership of your academic success and work with you to focus on your goals and help identify the steps to reach them. Academic coaching does not take the place of your academic advisor.
