How can "getting wild" make us get well? Some might jump (maybe even out of an airplane) at the chance to get wild. But how can that make us well?

What if more of us would "get wild" by taking even a few minutes every day to take a walk outside on a nature trail? Or a weekend to go camping at Ponca State Park? Or go skiing in Sioux Falls? How might being in nature affect not only human health, but environmental health?

Wayne State College students taking Introduction to Personal, Public, and Global Health, with support from WSC Service-Learning and the Rotary Club of Wayne, organize this semiannual event to bring campus and community together and hear from knowledgeable speakers, enjoy food and table conversations, and learn more about health topics before closing the evening with music by the WSC Chamber Choir. This year’s theme, “Get Wild and Get Well – Mitakuye Oyasin,” will address the health interactions of humans and nature as well as explore cultural and scientific ways of knowing about health. Mitakuye Oyasin is the Lakota phrase for “we are all relatives," a perfect way to capture an evening connecting us with ideas and learning together that the health of humans, animals, plants, and earth are all interrelated.

Speakers include:

  • Felicia Masquat of Winnebago Public Health and owner of Haini Wiragųšge Wiga (which means Morning Star), an organic native products business
  • Camilla Barajas, Winnebago Deputy Public Health Director and speaker on diabetes/native health promotion
  • Kim Schultz, retired public health professional and environmental advocate

Food and beverages will be provided.

Ideas and Conversations is a service-learning event series coordinated each semester by students taking PGH 200: Introduction to Personal, Public, and Global Health class, and co-sponsored by the WSC Service-Learning Program, the Rotary Club of Wayne, WSC Rotaract, and other community partners. In this series, students organize an event free and open to campus and community members to hear from keynote speakers on a selected theme. Attendees then engage in facilitated conversations designed to open eyes, hearts, and minds to complex health topics challenging the world today.
