About the Curriculum & Instruction master's degree program

Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, offers a Master of Science in Education (MSE) in Curriculum and Instruction–Instructional Leadership that combines advanced education coursework with focused study in a teaching specialty. The program helps educators deepen their subject knowledge, strengthen classroom instruction, and develop instructional leadership skills.

Core courses explore educational research, instructional theory and practice, and curriculum development. Students learn to evaluate research, examine teaching approaches, and organize curriculum around learning priorities and objectives. The program emphasizes inclusive, evidence-based practices, learning environments that support student achievement, and professional relationships with families, colleagues, and other education stakeholders.

Focus areas connect this foundation to specific classroom needs. Mathematics Education combines advanced mathematics with approaches to teaching and assessment. Reading Specialist coursework addresses phonics, structured literacy, reading interventions, and progress monitoring. Elementary Education examines curriculum across language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Additional options include English Education, English as a Second Language, Early Childhood Education, Music Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Business and Information Technology Education, Cross-Curricular Education, Skilled and Technical Sciences Education, and Social Sciences Education.

Most focus areas are fully online, with eight- and 16-week terms available. The hybrid Community of Learning option provides a two-year cohort experience for practicing teachers and education professionals, combining classroom collaboration with online learning.

No entrance exam is required. Program requirements range from 36 to 42 credit hours, depending on the focus area, and eligible students may transfer up to 12 graduate credits. These options allow educators to pursue advanced study while continuing their careers.
