Optional Practical Training (OPT)
OPT is a valuable opportunity for international students in the United States on F-1 visas to gain hands-on experience in their field of study. OPT provides a bridge between academic learning and professional employment, allowing students to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting and enhance their career prospects.
- OPT allows for up to 12 months of work authorization before or after completing your academic program. For students in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), an additional 24-month extension is available, bringing the total to 36 months (about three years).
- OPT can be utilized during your studies (pre-completion) or after you graduate (post-completion). However, the total duration of OPT, including any pre-completion and post-completion periods, cannot exceed 12 months unless you qualify for the STEM extension.
- Employment under OPT must be directly related to your major area of study. This can include multiple employers, short-term gigs, internships, and even self-employment, provided each position is relevant to your degree.
- Applying for OPT involves several important steps, each requiring careful attention to detail to ensure a smooth process. For a detailed step-by-step guide, including forms and additional resources, check out this comprehensive guide (ucis.gov) about OPT.
