Dr. Josh Calkin Faculty Recital Set for Oct. 24

The faculty tuba recital is free and open to the public.

Compositions for solo tuba shape Dr. Josh Calkin’s faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Wayne State College. The concert, free and open to the public, will be held in Ley Theatre, located on the second floor of the Brandenburg Building.

The performance features repertoire by composer Eugene Anderson, a self-professed tuba enthusiast. Selections include “Lyri-Tech I,” “Rock’n Tech III,” and the jazz-based “Concerto No. 3.” The concert also presents the world premiere of “Baroque’n Jazz Trio,” a Dixieland jazz inspired piece. To enhance the emotion of Anderson’s works, Calkin incorporates Wayne State musicians Shelly Armstrong, staff accompanist, piano; Dr. Karl Kolbeck, professor of woodwinds, clarinet; and Lauren Calkin, adjunct assistant instructor of percussion, percussion.

Calkin is a professor of music and director of bands at Wayne State College. His duties include directing the Wildcat Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Brass Ensemble, and Mariachi Oro y Negro. He also teaches all applied low brass and low brass methods, world music, and instrumental conducting.

Calkin earned his bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Plymouth State College in New Hampshire, his master’s of Music degree in Tuba Performance from Boise State University, and his doctor of Musical Arts degree in Tuba Performance from the University of Iowa.
