Performance is at 7:30 p.m. April 12 in Ley Theatre.

The Wayne State College Woodwind Chamber Ensembles traverse a fantastical night of music Wednesday, April 12, in Ley Theatre. The 7:30 p.m. performance is free and open to the public. It will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, go to www.wsc.edu/watch-live. The program will be accessible by selecting the event from the Music Events list at www.wsc.edu/music.

The concert features the Flute Choir, Clarinet Ensemble, Saxophone Quintet, and the world premiere of “Morning Sunrise” by senior Tresten Schwarz of Grand Island.

“When I started composing, it sounded like the morning sunrise,” explains Schwarz. “Inspiration just kind of came out of nowhere.”

The Flute Choir opens the concert with the graceful “Where the Rivers Meet” by Cait Nishimura before launching into the funky “Hip 2 Dat!” by Kate Agioritis, and the distinctive “Celtic Spirit” by Bill Douglas. The Clarinet Ensemble follows with the calypso-style “Monstrous Mango” by David McKeown, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” from the 1940 animated Walt Disney film “Fantasia,” and the charming “March of the Trolls” by Kate Agioritis.

The Saxophone Quintet ends the evening with the reflective “Memories of Benslow” by Alastair Penman, the amusing “Medieval Disco!” by David Burndrett, and the debut of “Morning Sunrise.” All ensembles are directed by Dr. Karl Kolbeck, professor of woodwinds.
