Dr. Josh Calkin, professor of low brass at WSC, performs Oct. 28 in Ley Theatre.

Dr. Josh Calkin honors British composers during a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, in Ley Theatre at Wayne State College. The concert is free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, go to www.wsc.edu/watch-live

British Tuba Music heralds the power and expressiveness of British composers. Calkin, WSC professor of low brass, weaves virtuosic tuba solos with the melodic support of Shelly Armstrong, WSC staff accompanist. Repertoire includes the robust "Tuba Concerto" by Philip Sparke, the magnificent "Six Studies in English Folksong" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, the marvelous "Tuba Suite" by Gordon Jacob, the romantic "Salut d’amour" by Edward Elgar, and the technically challenging "Fantasy for Tuba" by Malcolm Arnold.
