The Symphonic Band presents the classic “Kentucky-1800” by Clare Grundman, a montage of folksongs reminiscent of the American pioneers. “Ravensgate” by Carl Strommen is an upbeat sea shanty, while “Niobrara River Sketches” by Larry MacTaggart is a vibrant depiction of Nebraska’s scenic landscapes. The Symphonic Band is conducted by Michael Genslinger, assistant director of bands at Wayne State.
The Wind Ensemble delivers the bold, military-style “Toccata Marziale” by Ralph Vaughan Williams and the high-energy, tribal feel of “Incantation and Dance” by John Barnes Chance. “I Am” by Andrew Boysen celebrates life with expressive textures and harmonies. The exuberant “Folk Dances” by Dmitri Shostakovich delights with festive, cheerful vitality. The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Josh Calkin, director of bands at Wayne State.
