The program is accessible by selecting the event from the Upcoming Music Events list on the Music Department page.

Calkin is a professor of music and director of bands at Wayne State.

Featuring vocal pieces uniquely arranged for tuba, the concert incorporates piano accompaniment by Shelly Armstrong, Wayne State’s collaborative pianist; prerecorded electronic accompaniment; and unaccompanied repertoire.

Piano accompanied selections include the rich texture of “Five Songs by Johannes Brahms” transcribed by Don Little; the evocative “Two Songs for Tuba and Piano” by Robert Spillman; and the tender, yet vibrant “Six Studies in English Folksong” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. “Aboriginal Voices for Tuba and Fixed Media” by Neal Corwell captures a mystical primal dance while “Canticle for Unaccompanied Tuba” by David Holben echoes sacred, medieval chants.
