Dr. Karl Kolbeck and accompanist Shelly Armstrong will collaborate for the 7:30 p.m. recital in Ley Theatre.
Dr. Karl Kolbeck, professor of woodwinds at Wayne State College, pays tribute to the musical expressiveness of the clarinet with a faculty recital Thursday, Sept. 4, on campus. The recital, set for 7:30 p.m. in the Brandenburg Building’s Ley Theatre, is free and open to the public.
The performance will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, visit the Watch Live page.
A downloadable PDF of the concert program will be posted on the event page when it becomes available. The event page can be accessed from the Upcoming Livestream Events section on the Watch Live page.
The performance will also feature Shelly Armstrong on piano. Armstrong is the collaborative pianist at Wayne State.
Repertoire challenges technical expertise with the flashy “Kosak” by Giuseppe Ricotta and the slow, lyrical “Theme for Clarinet” by Michele Mangani. The impressive “Sanctuary at 3 AM” by Rick Sowash is a gorgeous, yet melancholy, salute to safe refuge, while “Golden Hour” by Cait Nishimura expresses the dancing colors of an imminent sunset. “Sholem-alekhem, rov Feidman!” by Béla Kovács honors Giora Feidman, a master performer of klezmer music, and the tradition of klezmer clarinet.
