'Italian Studies' Art Exhibit Opens Aug. 27, 2025

Two pieces of artwork by Margaret Bohls

Visiting artist Margaret Bohls' work will be on display through Oct. 1.

“Italian Studies,” featuring works by visiting artist Margaret Bohls, opens Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 4:30 p.m. in the Nordstrand Visual Arts Gallery, located on the main level of Conn Library at Wayne State College. An artist lecture precedes the opening at 3:45 p.m. in Ley Theatre, located in the Brandenburg Building. Both events are free and open to the public.

The exhibit runs through Oct. 1.

Historic forms and functions inspire Bohls’ visual and sculptural pottery. The exhibition reflects her study of earthenware from ancient Italian civilizations, such as the Etruscans and the Apulians. The work is also influenced by Modernist-era European and American design. Bohls’ creativity focuses on exceptional attention to details, such as weight, lines, texture, and utility.

Her works have been featured in more than 100 exhibits throughout the U.S., with some chosen for permanent collections. She has given numerous university lectures, taught hands-on workshops, been featured in artistic journals, and written articles for pottery magazines. Her teaching career spans 30 years. Bohls’ unique works are sold locally and nationally.

Bohls is currently a professor of ceramics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Bohls earned her bachelor of fine arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence and her master of fine arts degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

The gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 3 to 7 p.m. It is closed Saturday. Shows end at noon on closing day.
