The Brass Knuckles Quintet performs “Through Heaven's Eyes” from the animated film “The Prince of Egypt” and written by Stephen Schwartz. Repertoire also includes the fun and familiar “Alexander's Ragtime Band” by Irving Berlin and “Ain’t Misbehavin’” by Fats Waller. The ensemble is directed by Dr. Melissa Derechailo, instructor of music and theatre manager at Wayne State.
The Trumpet Ensemble, directed by Michael Genslinger, assistant director of bands at Wayne State, captures grace and technical skill with “Serenade” from “L'Amant Jaloux” by Andre Gretry and the expressive beauty of “La Romanesca” by Fernando Sor. The Low Brass Choir, directed by Dr. Josh Calkin, performs a set of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Chorales,” echoing rich harmonic textures. Calkin is the director of bands at Wayne State.
Whimsical repertoire dominates the Percussion Ensemble’s performance. Directed by Brad Weber, adjunct instructor of percussion at Wayne State, selections include the bebop influenced “My Little Suede Shoes” by Charlie Parker and The Bangles 1980s chart-topper “Walk Like an Egyptian” by Liam Sternberg. Eric Snyder, a Wayne State alumnus and a retired high school instrumental music director, guest conducts “Island Breeze” by Robert Clayson.
