The Symphonic Band delivers the rich British flavor of “Ramsgate March” by Carl Strommen, the lush beauty of Germany in “Ammerland” by Jacob de Haan, and the triumphant “African Dreams” by Brant Karrick. The group then launches into the Dixieland favorite “St. Louis Blues” by W.C. Handy, a chart-topping early 1900s jazz tune.
The Jazz Combo features the familiar “All of Me” by Seymour Simons and Gerald Marks, the legendary “It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” by Duke Ellington, and the hard driving “Blue Bossa” by Kenny Dorham. Energy infuses the Jazz Ensemble’s performance of the fast-paced “Children of Sanchez” by Chuck Mangione, the spirited “Cottontail” by Duke Ellington, and the compelling African American spiritual “Oh Freedom!” arranged by Michael Genslinger, conductor of the ensembles and assistant director of bands at Wayne State.
