With the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska’s (BHECN, Northeast site) annual conference tomorrow (Friday, March 21), it’s been a busy week for graduate assistant Ben Bartholow of Omaha. Bartholow, who is pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, is this week’s subject of the Student Spotlight Series.

In addition to his graduate courses, Bartholow primarily works with BHECN Northeast functions. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Human Services from Wayne State in May 2024, and he received the Outstanding Student Award in Psychology during the April 2024 Social Sciences Day.

“I chose this path because I have always been passionate about helping others navigate their mental health challenges,” said Bartholow. “From an early point in my studies, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in counseling, particularly in the mental health field. During my undergraduate years, I gained practical experience in human services, such as working at a summer camp and serving as a peer mentor. These roles not only helped me develop the interpersonal and leadership skills essential for the profession, but they also affirmed my commitment to pursuing a career dedicated to supporting others.”

However, clinical mental health wasn’t Bartholow’s first choice.

“I had originally planned to become a school counselor, but after reflecting on my experiences and career goals, I recognized that Clinical Mental Health Counseling was a better fit for me,” said Bartholow. “I was drawn to the opportunity to work directly with individuals facing a range of mental health challenges, and I felt more aligned with the idea of offering individualized care in a clinical setting.”

“My experiences with peers and mentors have also played a significant role in shaping my decision,” added Bartholow. “Throughout my education, I’ve been encouraged to engage with organizations in my community, and these real-world connections have solidified my desire to pursue this path. They’ve shown me the importance of empathy, ethical practice, and the need for dedicated professionals who can respond to the diverse needs of individuals seeking mental health support.”

Bartholow said Wayne State’s small size was also a key component for his career choice.

“Wayne State’s welcoming campus size and great location and close-knit community fosters personal and professional growth,” said Bartholow. “The college has continuously provided me with opportunities to learn, grow, and lead, which have been integral to my academic journey. I’ve had the chance to engage in various leadership roles, including peer mentoring, tutoring, and working as a graduate assistant. These experiences have helped me develop not only academic skills but also interpersonal and leadership abilities.”

“Additionally, my work with BHECN and regional community organizations has allowed me to develop a professional network, which has been great for my professional development,” added Bartholow. “The opportunity to engage in service learning and field experiences has deepened my understanding of human services and behavioral health, particularly in Northeast Nebraska.”

Bartholow isn’t just helping with the BHECN conference; he’s making a poster presentation entitled “Adolescent Restraint and Seclusion: A Review of Characteristics Impacting Use of Restraint and Seclusion in Adolescent Residential Treatment Facilities.”

Bartholow will earn his master’s degree in December 2026, and he intends to pursue a career as a mental health counselor.
