With the initial intent to attend college out of state, Courtlyn Keeling did some research and cost comparisons and came to the realization that Wayne State was “a hidden gem.” The sophomore from Auburn, Neb., who is majoring in Business Administration (Human Resource Management), is this week’s subject of the Student Spotlight Series.

“I realized Wayne State was a more affordable option for my education path,” said Keeling. “Wayne State also has many great amenities such as the new residence hall (Stearns Hall), a renovated athletic and recreation complex, and the Student Health and Counseling Center. Plus, the campus is fantastic.”

In fact, Keeling has enjoyed her Wayne State experience so much that it inspired her to become a Navigator for Wayne State’s Admissions Office so she can share her love of Wayne State with incoming students.

“I’ve enjoyed all the connections, experiences, and opportunities Wayne State has provided me during the past two years,” said Keeling. “It’s allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and experience new things I wouldn’t have considered in high school. I’ve made lifelong friends at Wayne State who have positively influenced who I am today and who I want to be in the future. Wayne State has definitely become my home away from home.”

Finding that right fit for college may have impacted Keeling’s decision to pursue a major in Human Resource Management.

“I have two aunts that work in human resources, and I’ve done some job shadowing in the past, but finding that perfect applicant to fill a position is definitely a great feeling,” said Keeling.

When she arrived at Wayne State, Keeling was no stranger to the Nebraska State College System. Her mom, Kelcie Keeling, is currently the director of marketing and communications for Peru State College.

In addition to serving as a Navigator, Keeling is active in the Cooperative Education Career Scholars Program, Student Senate, the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), and the executive board of Cat PAC (Wildcat Programming and Activities Council).

Keeling will graduate in May 2027, and she intends to pursue a human resources career in healthcare or manufacturing.
