UPDATE: This event has been canceled.

Dr. Karl Kolbeck pays tribute to the musical expressiveness of the clarinet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, in Ley Theatre, located on the second floor of the Brandenburg Building at Wayne State College. The concert is free and open to the public and will also feature Shelly Armstrong, Wayne State’s collaborative pianist.

The concert will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, visit the Watch Live page.

A downloadable PDF of the concert program will be posted on the event page when it becomes available. The event page can be accessed from the Upcoming Livestream Events section on the Watch Live page.

Kolbeck serves as professor of woodwinds at Wayne State.

Repertoire challenges technical expertise with the flashy “Kosak” by Giuseppe Ricotta and the slow, lyrical “Theme for Clarinet” by Michele Mangani. The impressive “Sanctuary at 3 AM” by Rick Sowash is a gorgeous, yet melancholy, salute to safe refuge while “Golden Hour” by Cait Nishimura expresses the dancing colors of an imminent sunset. “Sholem-alekhem, rov Feidman!” by Béla Kovács honors Giora Feidman, a master performer of klezmer music, and the tradition of klezmer clarinet.
