Science Activities for Children
The AJS Natural History Museum has many hands-on, minds-on activities for children. Visitors can ‘explore the drawers’ and investigate questions based on biological or geological specimens that can be observed with a digital microscope. Visitors can also identify animal tracks, build electric circuits, or form virtual landforms.
Many K-12 student groups visit the museum as part of regional field trips organized by their school. Tours of the museum and the collections are also available to organizations during non-business hours. Contact the museum director, Dr. Mark Hammer, for further information.
Outreach
The museum supports biological monitoring activities in northeast Nebraska. WSC Education students work with third grade students from Wayne Elementary School to perform biological assessment of the Wayne Izaak Walton League Lake. WSC Advance Ecology students have conducted biological assessments of South Logan Creek for the City of Wayne.
Students in WSC Art classes use museum specimens as models for drawings and sculptures. Educational professionals can borrow museum materials for regional environmental education activities.
