Dr. Johanna Barnes is an education professor at Wayne State College. She facilitates undergraduate and graduate courses in both in-person and online formats. Her teaching interests include effective practices in elementary mathematics, elementary methods, and instructional design.
Barnes's research focuses on mathematical mindsets, classroom action research, teacher leadership, and learning in community contexts. She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and has presented at regional and national conferences.
Before coming to Wayne State, Barnes taught second grade for 11 years in Newman Grove, Neb. She currently works with first- and second-grade students at the Wayne Early Learning Center as part of the Math Circles program.
Barnes is a proud graduate of Wayne State College and received the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2022.
