
Melissa Derechailo, DMA
Instructor
Dr. Melissa Derechailo teaches horn, music history, music theatre history and music industry in the Music Department at Wayne State College.
Prior to teaching at Wayne State, she taught in the public schools in Asheville, N.C., and was a horn lecturer at Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. While teaching, she maintained an active playing schedule as a member of the Asheville Symphony and Greater Spartanburg Philharmonic. Locally, she has performed with A Touch of Brass, the Sioux City Symphony, and the Sioux City Municipal Band. She has presented clinics at the Midwest College Music Society, the Iowa Music Educators Association, and the Nebraska State Band masters conferences.
In addition to teaching for the Department of Music, Derechailo also serves as the theatre manager for the Ley and Ramsey theatres. She has pursued her interest in theatre by earning an MFA in Theatre Education, serving for seven years on the Wayne Community Theatre board, co-founding a summer music theatre camp for area teens, directing, and acting, and creating set and lighting design for area productions.
