Vicki Wamberg Byrkit (graduate of Wausa High School) was a standout high jumper in high school and at Wayne State during her Wildcat career from 1982 to 1985. (She only competed three years at WSC because she student taught in spring of senior season). Byrkit held the school record at Wayne State for 22 years and was a two-time All-American, placing fifth in the NAIA Indoor National Championships clearing 5 feet, 4 inches, and fourth at the 1984 NAIA Indoor National Championships (5 feet, 6 inches). Byrkit was also a three-time outdoor national qualifier at WSC and placed second at the CSIC meet as a sophomore, junior, and senior while also winning the NAIA District 11 meet as a sophomore. In high school, Byrkit was a four-year state qualifier in the high jump at Wausa and placed at state twice. Her father Dale and five of the six Wamberg children graduated from Wayne State. Byrkit resides in David City where she has been employed at David City Public School since 1993 and currently works as a second grade teacher. Byrkit was inducted into the WSC Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 10, 2015.
