Warren "Bud" Best attended Wayne State from 1939 to 1943, graduating with a degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. Best was the second athlete in the history of Wayne State College Athletics to achieve the distinction of having won a varsity letter in three sports for all four years he attended. As a football player, he was awarded All-Conference distinction three straight years - 1940, 1941, and 1942. Best played basketball during those same years and was named an All-Conference guard in 1942 and 1943. In track, Best co-held the 100-yard dash record of 9.9 seconds, which he set in 1943. After graduation, Best taught in the Albion School District (Neb.) from 1946 to 1952, where he coached football, basketball, and track, as well as teaching. From Albion he moved to the Norfolk, Neb., area to teach and coach football and track for five years. Best was an associate professor of Health and Physical Education at the University of Northern Colorado from 1957 to 1967. While there, he was the head swimming coach, backfield coach in football, and the assistant baseball coach. At the time of his induction, Best was the Director of Career and Placement and a teacher of College Student Personnel Administration at the University of Northern Colorado. Best was inducted into the WSC Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 11, 1980.
