Rex Johnson first attended Wayne State in 1942. He served in the Seabees from 1943 to 1946, and then returned to Wayne to finish his WSC athletic career from 1946 to 1949. Johnson lettered four years in football as a two-way performer at guard and linebacker. During his senior year, he was captain of Wayne State's 1948 championship Nebraska College Conference team. That same season Johnson was all-conference, and was named to the Tom Harmon "Little All America" team. He also lettered two years in track ('48 and '49). After graduation Johnson served as head football coach (over a 12-year period) at the Nebraska high schools of Battle Creek, Wahoo, Columbus, and Omaha Benson. He then was head football coach at Bellingham, Wash., High School for 11 years. Johnson also coached track at each of these schools, and received an M.A. degree from the University of Wyoming. When he retired in 1982, he served as Assistant Principal and Athletic Director in the Bellingham School District. Johnson was inducted into the Wayne State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983.
