Jim Morrison

Jim Morrison was a standout coach at Wayne State from 1938 until 1947. During that time, he coached the football, men's basketball, and men's track and field teams. In six seasons with the football team, Morrison compiled a 25-18-8 record. At the time of this writing, he was sixth among WSC football coaches in career victories. In 1942, Morrison guided the Wildcats to a 5-0-2 record. Following a two-year hiatus because of World War II, the Wildcats posted a 6-1-1 mark in 1945, Morrison's final season. Morrison was equally successful with the basketball team. During five seasons with the program, Morrison posted a 55-40 record. His .579 winning percentage was, at the time of this writing, the fourth highest among WSC coaches who coached at least three seasons. Morrison also coached the Wildcats' men's track and field team from 1940-42 and again from 1945-46. As an educator, Morrison placed great emphasis on the intramural athletic program he developed. He thought the athletes who competed at the varsity level would be inclined to be physically active their whole lives, while the other students should be encouraged to find a sport they could enjoy for the rest of their lives. Morrison was inducted into the WSC Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 4, 1997, and was posthumously recognized during the 2003 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies Oct. 4, 2003.
