Fred Dale was a participant in track, football, and basketball for Wayne State from 1914 to 1916 and returned to coach at WSC from 1921 to 1929. Dale left Wayne in 1916 to attend the University of Nebraska, where he lettered three times in football and track. In 1929, he gave up his athletic duties to teach full time, finally retiring in 1961 with the longest faculty tenure in WSC history, 40 years. The college planetarium bears his name, as does a scholarship presented annually to an athlete with academic excellence. Dale was inducted into the WSC Athletics Hall of Fame on Feb. 3, 1979.
