This is a reminder for everyone that uses or is involved with our Sakai Learning Management System (LMS) that we will be switching over in the May session to the new Sakai 11 instance. This new platform is mobile friendly and, because it is a ‘clean’ install on a more modern database, will resolve some of the performance issues we’ve had with the current Sakai. We’re only 6 weeks away from the May term and there’s still a fair amount to do, some of which we need your help with:
- For faculty – content migration. Because this needs to be a ‘clean’ install to resolve performance issues on current Sakai, faculty need to migrate what content they wish to use for future classes from the “Sakai Content To Move” instance to the “Sakai 11” instance. We do have a tool to assist with this, but it is far from perfect and, while most content is moved, it often needs to be re-linked or tweaked in Sakai 11 to function properly. We understand that this is frustrating and creates more work for you. Our apologies – we had hoped to have a smoother solution and we have beat the bushes with the Sakai community, but while Sakai still ranks among the best LMS solutions out there, this is not one of its strengths. We do have classes to help you learn to use the tool, identify which parts of our content you may need to fix, and resolve those. The schedule for those classes is at the bottom of this e-mail. Also, we have provided videos to assist with content migration on the help sheets located here.
- For faculty and staff – documentation. We have updated help sheets for Sakai 11 so if you link to our existing help sheets or have references to them in other documentation, please update those to point to the new documents. You’ll find the new help sheets available here.
Thank you for your help in moving us to the next level in our online learning environment!
