Disease Prevention

In addition to a flu vaccine, you can stop the spread of influenza by following some basic steps.

Practice good hand hygiene:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water
  • Use hand sanitizer (available for public areas from WSC Central Supply)
  • Don’t touch eyes, nose or mouth with your hands

Practice good cough/sneeze hygiene:

  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with tissue; or use your elbow/shoulder instead of your hands if you have no tissue
  • Wash hands with soap/water or use hand sanitizer immediately after coughing or sneezing

Practice good workplace hygiene:

  • Frequently clean commonly-used surfaces that have multiple users such as doorknobs, countertops, shared computer keyboards, etc. (supplies available for public areas from WSC Central Supply)
  • Stay home if you have a fever of 100 or more AND cough or sore throat

Educate yourself on influenza, how it is spread and how you can reduce your risks:

  • Read the Wayne State College regular email updates that will be coming to your email account
  • Talk to your personal healthcare provider if you have specific questions
  • Monitor your own health by checking for fever or other symptoms
