Mary Helms '24 will travel to La Rioja, Spain, for her Fulbright English Teaching Assistant experience.
Mary Helms of Arlington will begin her Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) experience in September in La Rioja, Spain.
Helms graduated Summa cum Laude from Wayne State College on May 4 with a bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences/Biology.
The ETA Programs place Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to assist the local English teachers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the United States. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. Applicants for ETA Programs can apply to only one country, according to the Fulbright website.
Carter Ossian '23 of David City was also awarded a Fulbright ETA Award, but he declined it in order to continue teaching at his current position. Sara Lundeen '24 of Axtell was also a semi-finalist for the award. Lundeen graduated Summa cum Laude from Wayne State on May 4 with a bachelor’s degree in History.
In April, Helms was one of three Wayne State students to receive the Dr. Ron Holt Civic Engagement Award, which recognizes a graduating Wayne State senior who has served as an exemplary role model and contributed to the service ethos of the college campus and community. Lundeen also received the award in April, and Ossian was a 2023 recipient.
Helms is the daughter of Don and Julie Helms.
