Speech Students Capture Four First-Place Finishes in January 2024

The Wayne State forensics team has built up momentum with strong showings in their first two tournaments of the Spring 2024 semester.

The Wayne State College’s forensics team began the Spring 2024 semester in style with four first-place finishes by students and a second-place Team Sweepstakes finish during the Valley Forensics League Tournaments 3 and 4 held Jan. 27 at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D.

Brayden Almgren, Stuart; Kirsten Fike, York – 3rd place, Duo Interpretation
Kirsten Fike, York – 4th place, Poetry
Chloe Hibler, Plattsmouth – 1st place, Prose; 6th place, Persuasive Speaking
Corbin Kinney, Elgin – 1st place, Program Oral Interpretation
Faatimah Kouatli, Stanton – 1st place, Persuasive Speaking
Olivia Perske, David City – 2nd place, Program Oral Interpretation; 4th place, Persuasive     Speaking
Team Sweepstakes – 2nd place (out of 11 schools)

Clash of the Climates Speech Tournament

Wayne State’s forensics team also competed in the Clash of the Climates Speech Tournament Jan. 20 at Concordia University in Seward.

“I’m extremely proud of what these students accomplished in our first two competitions this semester,” said Jonathan Laner, head coach of Wayne State’s forensics team. “The work they put in prior to these competitions definitely paid off, and we now have a lot of momentum going forward for future competitions.”

The forensics team’s next competition is the Nebraska Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament Saturday, Feb. 10, at Doane University in Crete.
