1949 Football Team

Inducted: 1999

The 1949 football team made history by compiling a perfect 9-0-0 record. The team is still the only undefeated and untied team in school history. In addition, the nine victories is still a single season record, which was matched by the 1993 squad. The Wildcats, under the direction of head coach Jack Wink, featured a high-powered offense and a stingy defense. The team averaged over 24 points per game. WSC scored at least 20 points in eight of its nine contests, including a season-high 37 points against Midland Lutheran College. Defensively, the Wildcats surrendered only 7.5 points per game. Only three teams reached double figures against the 'Cats, while the remaining six opponents were held to seven points or less.Wayne State's perfect season that year was in jeopardy in the final game of the season as the Wildcats trailed Doane College at halftime before scoring two second-half touchdowns to win 20-13. The victory also secured the Nebraska College Conference championship for the Wildcats. The 1949 WSC football team was inducted into the WSC Athletics Hall of Fame on October 2, 1999. The induction was a surprise announcement for team members, who had gathered during Homecoming for a 50-year reunion.
