Wayne State student Tamara Wilson works with a Wayne Elementary School student on an exercise involving a gravity maze during Family Math, Science, and Art Night at the elementary school. The event, part of Wayne State’s Service-Learning program, provided several STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities for about 100 elementary school students. Wilson is majoring in Elementary Education at Wayne State.

The family event featured exercises created by Wayne State students enrolled in math for elementary school teachers.

Approximately 100 students from Wayne Elementary School participated in Wayne State College’s Family Math, Science, and Art Night held Nov. 14 at the elementary school.

The event, sponsored by Wayne State’s Service-Learning Program, featured several STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) exercises for the elementary school students.

Many Wayne State Service-Learning students served as instructors for the numerous exercises, activities, and projects. Dr. Mary Kuchta, associate professor of mathematics at Wayne State, and her students enrolled in math for elementary school teachers created the exercises for the elementary school students.

Family Math, Science, and Art Night was held in conjunction with Wayne State’s Service-Learning Program, which began in 1999. Each year, hundreds of Wayne State students make a difference in the community by participating in Service-Learning projects, contributing nearly $250,000 to the region in community service.
