Benthack Hall Renovation

Benthack Hall

Wayne State completed the total renovation of Benthack Hall home of counseling, education, and the family and consumer sciences programs, and hosted a ribbon cutting and official opening of the facility this fall as part of Homecoming 2022 festivities. The new facility features a state-of-the-art counseling training clinic; foods lab with six student kitchen stations and a teacher/guest demonstration area; textiles, apparel, and interior design lab spaces with major software platforms used in the industry; “sample room” for interior design; and two state-of-the-art education labs to complement the content labs across campus. One lab is devoted to the study and instruction of English/language arts, reading, writing, and literacy development. The other lab is devoted to the instruction and study of the sciences, mathematics, and technology in education.
The Wayne State Foundation’s Invest, Empower, and Transform Campaign raised $1 Million to assist with funding this renovation. Several rooms are named after alumni and donors who gave generous contributions to the renovation:

  • John and Theresa ’78 McTaggart. The William and Ruth Scott Family Foundation recognized the McTaggart family by naming the McTaggart Family Student Lounge and the Bud and Mitzi McCullough Education Lab in their honor.
  • Dennis and Marcia Hult ’59. The Hult Family Learning Lab honors the distinguished classroom teaching careers of the Hults.
  • George ’56 and Dr. Susan ’55 Menking. The Dr. Susan Menking Ph.D. Counseling Training Center recognizes Dr. Menking’s passion for teaching and practicing psychology.
  • Don and Diane Soukup ’71. Benthack Hall Room 110 recognizes the generous support provided by the Soukups.
