Bob Schnitzler

Bob Schnitzler is a 1961 graduate of Wayne State College. He played football and baseball at WSC and participated in track his first year (baseball was not offered at WSC during his freshman year). He earned four football letters, two baseball letters, and one track letter. Bob is a native of Humphrey and graduated from Humphrey High School. He attended WSC from 1957-61 and earned a bachelor's degree in physical education with an industrial arts minor.Following his graduation from Wayne State College, Schnitzler went on to become one of the most successful high school coaches in Nebraska history at Battle Creek High School. In football, Schnitzler coached Battle Creek to a 293-89 record, qualifying for the state playoffs 16 times with four state championships and five runner up finishes. He coached the Battle Creek girls basketball team to an amazing 485-83 win-loss record with 18 trips to the state tournament, winning five state titles to go with three runner-up finishes. Schnitzler also coached the Battle Creek boys track team to four state championships, two runner up placings, 20 district championships and 169 invitational championships. Following his retirement from Battle Creek, he returned to coaching for a short time at Lindsay Holy Family High School and took the boys basketball team to the state tournament. Schnitzler was named the Nebraska Coaches Association Coach of the Year, Omaha World Herald and Lincoln Journal Star Coach of the Year, Mid States Conference Coach of the Year and Iowa Siouxland Coach of the Year. He was nominated five times for the National Coach of the Year and was named the Region VI Coach of the Year twice. He was inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.Schnitzler was inducted into the Wayne State College Athletics Hall of Fame in October of 1982.
