Don Weitzenkamp

Inducted: 1996

Don Weitzenkamp was a four-year letter winner in both cross country and track and field at Wayne State College from 1957-1962. The native of Lyons earned All-American honors in cross country and outdoor track for the mile run. Weitzenkamp placed 20th at the NAIA Cross Country Championships with a time of 22:37 over the four-mile course and earned All-American honors in 1961 by placing fourth in the one-mile run with a time of 4:16.8, just six-tenths of a second shy of Merle McGee's school record that still exists today. At the time of induction, Weitzenkamp's name still appeared in the school record book in the distance medley relay team and ranked in the top five in two other individual outdoor events, including the 800 and one-mile runs. Weitzenkamp was inducted into the WSC Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 1996.
