In February of each year, teams of young scientists from all over Nebraska gather at Wayne State College for the Nebraska Science Bowl. The first Saturday in February features middle school teams and coaches. The college hosts the high school students and coaches on the second Saturday. The competition is fun, fast-paced, and intense. The winning team at each level will receive an all-expense paid trip to the National Science Bowl in Washington D.C., later that same year in April/May.
The goal of the Nebraska Science Bowl, as well as the National Science Bowl, is to encourage students to excel in science and mathematics. Many of these students will continue their education beyond high school and will have a career in an area of science and mathematics.
The opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m., followed by a round robin competition from 9:30 a.m. to noon involving all of the teams split into four divisions. The top four teams in each division will then advance to the double elimination competition, which will begin at 1 p.m. Medals will be awarded to the top four teams at each event.
