Wayne State College student Boone Evans of Herman, Neb., was awarded the Ron Holt Civic Engagement Award in honor of Dr. Ronald Holt, a 1989 Wayne State College Alumnus. The award recognizes a 2014 WSC senior with a $500 award upon graduation.

Evans was recognized for his service as an exemplary role model and contribution to the service ethos of the college campus and community at large. He participated in service‐learning academics and co‐curricular projects and events while at WSC. He maintained good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher while in college.

Evans is the son of Lyle and Patti Bohannon of Herman. He graduated May 10, 2014, with a chemistry health sciences major. He participated in Rotaract as treasurer, Alpha Lambda Delta honorary as senior advisor, STRIDE (Students Taking Responsibility In Development and Education), and Residence Hall Association (RHA) as secretary.

Evans served as a tutor as a student at WSC. Tutors are selected from among numerous qualified applicants and must be upper-class men and women with high overall grade-point averages. They also receive endorsements and recommendations from Wayne State faculty. Tutors may conduct large group review sessions before major tests and quizzes, work closely with students on an individual basis to answer specific questions and help with difficulties in their subject matter and consult regularly with faculty and administration members.

Dr. Holt is an attending psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in South San Francisco, Calif. His community service began at WSC 14 years ago when he began returning to campus each homecoming week as a volunteer to educate students on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues and civil rights.

Throughout his educational and professional career, Holt has exhibited outstanding accomplishments as a strong advocate and champion of civic engagement and community service.

“Each of us has unique knowledge, skills, and abilities that can be used to help others,’’ Holt said. “We each have the ability to make a difference in our own special way.”

Holt has received several awards for his community service across the country. He received the college’s 2004 Alumni Service Award and the 2012 Alumni Achievement Award.

In addition to his valued work as a trustee of the Wayne State Foundation, Holt has created numerous endowed and annual scholarships at Wayne State College. He began his first annual scholarship in 1989 while a WSC senior.
